How Quick Response (QR) Codes Function
Invented in 1994 by the Japanese automotive company Denso Wave, the Quick Response (QR) Code is a two-dimensional matrix symbology designed to be read optically at high speed. Unlike linear one-dimensional barcodes that encode information only horizontally, QR codes encode data across both horizontal and vertical axes, allowing them to store up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters.
Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes: The Privacy & Reliability Difference
When generating QR codes for product packaging, business cards, restaurant menus, or marketing brochures, understanding the distinction between static and dynamic codes is critical:
| Feature | Static QR Codes (NS Ascertain) | Dynamic QR Codes (Subscription Services) |
|---|---|---|
| Data Storage | Directly in the pixel matrix | Shortened URL redirecting to third-party server |
| Expiration | Never expires (Permanent) | Breaks if subscription lapses or server goes down |
| User Privacy | 100% Private (Zero telemetry) | Tracks user IP, device, and geolocation |
| Cost | 100% Free Forever | $10 to $50/month recurring fees |
